Renowned British actor, Michael Caine, a Hollywood legend with a career spanning seven decades, announced his retirement from acting at the age of 90. The Oscar-winning actor concludes his illustrious career after receiving praise for his final film, “The Great Escaper,” which hit theaters on October 6. In this movie, he portrays the real-life World War II British veteran Bernie Jordan, who escapes from a senior care home to attend the 2014 D-Day celebrations in France.
Caine shared his retirement news on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, saying, “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now. The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85. They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90; you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls. So I thought I might as well leave with all this.”
A highly productive actor known for his amiable Cockney charm and understated acting style, Michael Caine has graced over 160 films throughout his remarkable seven-decade career. His iconic and often-imitated voice has made him a defining figure in British cinema, especially during the Swinging Sixties.
His extensive filmography encompasses classics like “Zulu” and “The Italian Job,” and more contemporary hits including “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight” franchise, where he starred alongside Christian Bale.
A six-time Oscar nominee and a two-time Academy Award winner (in 1986 for “Hannah and Her Sisters” and in 2000 for “The Cider House Rules”), Caine has also earned Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and numerous other accolades.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. Interestingly, Caine’s retirement from acting coincides with the upcoming release of his first novel, “Deadly Game,” which is scheduled to hit the shelves a month from now. He disclosed in June that it had been a long-standing aspiration to write a thriller, given that it is the genre he enjoys reading the most.
