Christopher Nolan’s directorial film “Oppenheimer” was a massive success at the box office and achieved significant victories at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The film received eight nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Christopher Nolan for Best Director, and actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, and Emily Blunt.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy, known for his portrayal of American nuclear scientist J Robert Oppenheimer in the movie, won the Best Actor award for his performance. During his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to Nolan and Nolan’s wife Emma Thomas for their unwavering support of his artistic endeavors over the past decade.

Murphy also lauded Nolan as a “visionary director and master,” and shared his admiration for the intense level of commitment and focus exhibited during the filming of Oppenheimer. Director Christopher Nolan received the Best Director (Motion Picture) award, while Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. was honored with the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as Lewis Strauss in the same film.

While collecting his award, the Avengers actor commented on the movie’s performance at the box office. “A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1 bn?” he said in jest.

Ludwig Goransson, the composer of the background score, received the Best Score (Motion Picture) award for his work on Oppenheimer. The film also won the Best Motion Picture (Drama) award, surpassing Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest.

In the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, Oppenheimer was nominated, but the award went to Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Additionally, Oppenheimer was nominated for Best Screenplay, competing against Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Anatomy of a Fall. The Golden Globe for Best Screenplay (Motion Picture) was awarded to Justin Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.

Other victors of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards

Lily Gladstone received the Best Actress (Drama) award for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon. Billie Eilish and Finneas won the Best Song in a Motion Picture for What Was I Made for? in Barbie. HBO’s Succession was honored with the Best Television Series (Drama) award.

Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won Best Actor and Actress in a Television Series, Drama respectively. Elizabeth Debicki was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Late Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown. Ricky Gervais received the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy or Television award for Ricky Gervais: Armageddon.

The box office earnings of the Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer achieved a lifetime box office collection of Rs 157.50 crore in India, according to trade portal Sacnilk. The Christopher Nolan-directed film grossed $954 million globally during its theatrical run, as reported by Variety. Oppenheimer surpassed the earnings of superhero movies and major Hollywood films like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
