Taylor Swift Backs “Warrior” Kamala Harris for President, Signs Post ‘Childless Cat Lady’

American Singer-Songwriter superstar Taylor Swift has publicly came in support of Kamala Harris for presidential race, voicing her support for the Democratic candidate in an Instagram post shared just moments after the U.S. presidential debate. In her message, Swift praised Harris as the ideal leader to advance the rights and causes she holds dear, describing her as a “warrior” committed to meaningful change.

“As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can,” Swift told her 283 million Instagram followers late Tuesday. She added, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election.” Swift lauded Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader,” emphasizing that she believes the country can achieve far more if led by “calm and not chaos.”

In her endorsement, Swift also took the opportunity to encourage her vast fanbase, especially younger fans, to register to vote ahead of the 2024 election, underscoring the importance of civic participation.

Addressing AI and Misinformation

Swift’s statement also included a reference to recent AI-generated images shared by former President Donald Trump in late August, falsely depicting Swift and her fans as endorsing his campaign for president. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift said. She explained that these incidents made her realize the necessity of being transparent about her political stance in the 2024 election.

“After watching the presidential debate between Harris and Trump, I wanted to make sure my actual plans as a voter are clear,” Swift continued. She also urged her fans to research the candidates’ positions on issues that matter to them, adding that informed voting is crucial in shaping the future of the country.

A Response to Republican Criticism

Swift signed off the post with “Childless cat lady,” a direct reference to a derogatory comment made by Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance in 2021. Vance, speaking on Fox News, had criticized Democratic leaders as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” The term has since been used by some right-wing figures to mock liberal women, but Swift’s use of it appeared to reclaim the label with pride. The accompanying photo showed Swift with one of her beloved cats, Benjamin Button.

Despite Swift’s endorsement, the Trump campaign was quick to dismiss her support for Harris. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump, remarked, “This is further evidence that the Democrat party has unfortunately become a party of the wealthy elites.” Leavitt went on to claim that many of Swift’s fans, or “Swifties,” supported Trump, though she provided no specific evidence for the assertion.

Swift’s Political Influence

While this marks Swift’s first public endorsement of a candidate in the 2024 presidential race, the singer has a history of backing Democratic candidates. In 2018, she broke her political silence by supporting Democratic contenders in the midterm elections, and in 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden for president. However, until Tuesday, she had not openly supported anyone for 2024.

Swift’s influence on her fans, particularly younger voters, could be significant. A coalition of her fans, calling themselves “Swifties for Kamala,” has already mobilized for Harris. The group officially launched in late August and has since raised over $138,000 for the Harris campaign through a virtual rally featuring prominent figures like Carole King and senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand.

Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, expressed his gratitude to Swift during an MSNBC interview, calling her support courageous. “I say that also as a fellow cat owner,” Walz added, acknowledging the playful sign-off Swift used in her post.

Celebrity Endorsements and Electoral Impact

While the real impact of celebrity endorsements on elections is hard to quantify, previous research has suggested they can make a difference. A study by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Maryland found that Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic primary translated into approximately one million votes. Obama ultimately won key states over Hillary Clinton by a smaller margin, showing that high-profile endorsements could influence outcomes.

Swift’s influence might have a similar effect, especially among younger voters. A 2023 Fox News poll found that 55% of voters had a favorable view of Swift, including 68% of Democrats. Republicans were divided, with 43% holding favorable opinions of the singer, while 45% viewed her unfavorably.

Cayce Myers, a professor of public relations at Virginia Tech, commented on Swift’s potential impact, noting that her endorsement could help mobilize Generation Z voters. For many young fans, Swift’s political voice carries weight, and her advocacy could drive higher voter turnout among this demographic in 2024.

Swift’s public engagement in politics may further fuel debate around the role of celebrities in shaping public opinion, as the 2024 race unfolds.
