The announcement was made by Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, who noted Douglas’s profound affection for India.

Earlier this year, at the Cannes Film Festival, Douglas spoke of his “wonderful, wonderful experience” in India and expressed his desire to visit the country again.
Michael Douglas boasts an illustrious film career, with credits including the cult classic thriller ‘Basic Instinct’ and Academy Award winners like ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and ‘Wall Street.’
In his official statement, Thakur expressed his delight in presenting the award to Douglas, a distinguished figure in Hollywood. Thakur also revealed the festival’s anticipation in welcoming Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, and their son, offering them a platform to showcase India’s rich cinematic culture and unique traditions.
Michael Douglas initiated his Hollywood journey in 1966, participating in over 63 films, earning an Academy Award for ‘Best Actor’ for his role in the 1987 drama ‘Wall Street.’
Throughout his career, Douglas has received the American Film Institute Lifetime Award in 2009 and secured multiple BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award nominations and wins.
The Satyajit Ray Excellence in Film Lifetime Award, previously bestowed on luminaries like Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar-wai, Lata Mangeshkar, and Dilip Kumar, now recognizes the outstanding contributions of Michael Douglas to the world of cinema.
At the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May, during which he was honored with an honorary Palme d’Or, Douglas explored the India pavilion with L Murugan, then the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting. He expressed his admiration for India’s energy, imagination, and creativity, and his eagerness to visit the southern parts of the country, from Hyderabad to Goa, with his wife.
