Gone are the days when television and OTT took a backseat to cinema. In recent years, the salaries of actors in web series and the overall budgets of productions have significantly risen. Some of today’s most expensive web series now compete with big-budget films in terms of production costs. The highest-budget Indian web series ever created surpassed popular shows like Animal and Dunki, with the lead actor earning a record-breaking remuneration.
Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, the Hindi adaptation of the British show Luther on Disney+ Hotstar, is known as the most expensive Indian show on OTT platforms. With a reported budget of Rs 200 crore, it surpasses the budget of any other Indian streaming content. According to a report from the Times of India, lead star Ajay Devgn charged Rs 125 crore, with the remaining amount allocated to production, marketing costs, and the salaries of the rest of the cast.
Rudra’s budget surpasses that of Bollywood films by a significant margin
It is interesting to note that Rudra’s budget surpasses that of some recent big Indian films such as Dunki (Rs 85 crore) and Animal (Rs 100 crore). Even Aamir Khan’s ambitious Laal Singh Chaddha had a budget of Rs 180 crore, which is lower than Rudra’s. Other recent Indian films with budgets lower than Rudra season 1 include Gadar 2 (Rs 60 crore), Sam Bahadur (Rs 50 crore), and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 132 crore).
