Karan Johar recently graced the premiere of “Kill,” a movie he co-produced, at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. During the festival, he took some time to speak with ET Canada, sharing his thoughts on Priyanka Chopra’s transition to Hollywood. Johar wholeheartedly described her move as “fantastic.”
When discussing Priyanka Chopra’s shift from Bollywood to Hollywood, Karan Johar went on to say, “Watching Priyanka grow from strength to strength and achieve remarkable success on her own terms is truly inspiring. She has consistently shone on every platform she’s been a part of, reflecting her remarkable values and what she represents. It’s nothing short of fantastic.”
For those unaware, Priyanka Chopra starred in the 2008 film “Dostana,” produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
Earlier this year, Priyanka Chopra made headlines during an interview with Dax Shepard, where she candidly discussed her “beef” with certain figures in Bollywood, which played a role in her decision to venture into Hollywood.
During her appearance on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Priyanka Chopra was asked about her decision to explore the U.S. entertainment industry for the first time. She responded by revealing, “I’ve never said this before, so I’m going to share it because I feel safe here.”
She further elaborated on her move, explaining, “I felt like I was being pushed into a corner in the Bollywood industry. I had issues with people, I had conflicts, and I wasn’t good at playing that game. So, I grew tired of the politics and decided I needed a break.”
It was during this phase that Anjula Acharia, who now manages Priyanka Chopra, noticed her in a video and reached out. At the time, Priyanka Chopra was working on Vishal Bharadwaj’s film “Saat Khoon Maaf.” Acharia had heard Priyanka’s music demo and inquired if she would be interested in pursuing a music career in the United States. The offer came at a time when Priyanka was exploring options beyond Bollywood.
Priyanka Chopra explained, “This opportunity in music allowed me to explore a different part of the world. It freed me from the need to chase after roles I didn’t want and navigate certain social circles. Those circles required a level of conformity I no longer wished to pursue.”
As history now shows, Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood journey extended beyond music. She went on to star in various U.S. productions, including hit TV series like “Quantico” and the highly anticipated “Citadel.”
