According to the Drik Panchang, this year’s Karwa Chauth coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, a day of fasting dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The ladies will come together to observe Karwa Chauth on November 1 this year.
On Karwa Chauth, married women endure a rigorous fast. They abstain from food and water from sunrise until they witness the moonrise in the evening. This observance is deeply significant in their expression of love and devotion.
Karwa Chauth: History and Significance: Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, carries a unique tradition. Karwa or Karak symbolizes a clay pot used to make a special water offering to the moon, known as Argha. Subsequently, this Karwa is presented to a Brahmin or another worthy woman as Dan (charity).
The fasting during Karwa Chauth occurs during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik. In regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Southern India, it corresponds to the Ashwin month according to the Amanta calendar. Despite the name of the month varying, Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the same day throughout the country.
The roots of Karwa Chauth can be traced back to the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata. One tale within the epic narrates the story of Savitri, who ardently implored Lord Yama, the deity of death, for her husband’s soul. Another chapter tells of the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi. When Arjuna embarked on a journey to seek blessings, Draupadi sought guidance from her brother Krishna. He advised her to observe a strict fast similar to that of Goddess Parvati for the well-being of her husband Shiva. Draupadi adhered to this fast, and Arjuna returned home safely.
Karwa Chauth stands as a symbol of unwavering love, devotion, and the indomitable spirit of Indian traditions.
