Selena Gomez, a singer, actor, and businesswoman in the beauty industry, recently opened up about her health problems and said she was first reluctant to share her diagnosis with others. 2014 saw Selena receive a lupus diagnosis, and 2018 saw her learn she had bipolar disorder. The singer did, however, take the time to update her followers on her health.
She told Fast Company that discussing her health was perilous since it was perceived as such in the industry, “I grew up being a people pleaser… I had a responsibility at a very young age—young people were looking up to me. I didn’t know who I was. Having that responsibility would make me walk on eggshells a lot. I thought maybe it would be damaging to tell people who I am. It started to become a threat that freaked me out. Well, if you’re not right, then you can’t work,” she said.
On Her Health And Breakup, Selena Gomez
“I went through a really hard season. It was my highs and my lows, and I didn’t know what to do, so I couldn’t control it. I would want to cancel things. It was just a tormented feeling. That’s why, when I found out my diagnosis, it was just, ‘Oh, okay, I feel a bit relieved, I understand a bit more.’ I got second opinions. I went to the doctor. I’m fortunate enough to be able to have people who can help me survive every day,”, she added. Selena also made a quick comment regarding the timing of her decision to take a break from social media and the breakup with Justin Bieber.
In 2014, Selena received a lupus diagnosis, an autoimmune condition. She revealed in 2017 that she had the same ailment and needed a kidney transplant, with Francia Raisa, her best friend, serving as the donor. She had previously discussed how her lupus had made her body image problems worse after years of battle. During a live Instagram chat with Miley Cyrus in 2020, Selena disclosed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
